United Way AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates Help Alleviate Summer Learning Loss and Food Insecurity
Highlighting our AmeriCorps VISTAs
According to the California Department of Education, summer programs are crucial to prevent learning loss and food insecurity, especially for many children from low-income families. For this reason, United Way California Capital Region deployed AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates to various summer programs, especially those with a focus on education and nutrition.
Sixteen United Way AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates dedicated 400 hours to the greater Sacramento region. The Summer Associates were involved in various activities including serving nutritious meals and conducting STEM & literacy lesson plans. We partnered with Community Housing Opportunities (CHOC), Elk Grove Unified School District, Mutual Housing, and YMCA to extend the reach of our VISTA Summer Associates. We were thrilled to have the help of three Summer Associates in our office who conducted community outreach activities for our Summer Meals Program.
The AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate Program is a 3 month national service term that allows individuals to help alleviate poverty in their communities by joining a social service project. United Way Capital Region also works with full term (one year) AmeriCorps VISTAs. To view our list of VISTA opportunities, click here.
