1. If you have to pay, adjust your withholding now for next year.

Some people who received a pay increase as a result of the Federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 may be surprised to receive a smaller-than-expected refund or actually owe tax when they file their 2018 returns. To avoid this issue in the future, take time now to update your withholding. To change withholding, contact your employer to fill out a new W-4.

2. Be sure to file, even if you earned very little money.

Many people with low income do not have a filing requirement. But those same people are often eligible for cash-back state and federal Earned Income Tax Credits. For that reason, we encourage anyone who earned money in 2018 to file. If you don’t file, you may be leaving money on the table. For more info on state and federal EITCs, visit yourfreetaxmoney.org.

3. Be careful when entering account info when seeking to direct deposit your refund.

Many people opt to have their refund direct deposited into their bank account to get their money faster. However, if you make a mistake entering the account number into your software, your refund could be routed to the wrong place. If this happens, reach out as soon as possible to the Franchise Tax Board at 800-852-5711.

4. If you moved, share your new address with your employer.

By now, most of your tax documents should have arrived. If they didn’t, reach out to your employer, bank and anyone else you have financial dealings with to make sure they have your current contact info. The sooner you act, the sooner you can get the info you need to file your returns.

5. If you have a simple return, consider local free tax prep options.

United Way’s Free Tax program offers free help getting your federal and state returns done. Simply make an appointment, bring in your W-2 and other tax documents, and an IRS-certified volunteer will complete federal and state returns on the spot for free. Returns are filed electronically, helping taxpayers receive any tax refund they are due. Free Tax Prep services and events are available right up until Tax Day on April 15.
